Half Marathon Training Time
With this new year, I am officially starting my half marathon training regimen. I've been looking forward to sinking my teeth into this next phase of training for a few months now and especially since my hamstring has healed up and I'm able to put some distance work in again without any pain. Based on some of what I've read online and talking to my brother, I believe I could finish a half marathon at my current level. I've done a few 10 mile runs without any taper and those have felt good enough that I think I could crank out another 3.1 in a race environment.
I don't want to just finish the race now though, I'd like to train up to finish under two hours. At this point, I'm not sure if that's an outlandish goal to have, but I'm going to target my training towards that and see where that gets me. I'm going to use the Hal Higdon novice 2 half marathon training schedule as a starting point, but I may modify it some like I did for the 5k training. At the very least, I want to finish no slower than 2 and a half hours or so, but my target will definitely be to get under 2 hours.
As an aid to boost my motivation, the fifth installment of Hardcore History's Blueprint for Armageddon just came out so I have plenty of podcast material to keep me engaged for these long training runs! As I've said before, listening to music throws off my pace so I like to listen to podcasts while I run and Hardcore History has been my go to for the past several months and has seen me through numerous long runs and PR sessions. I don't let myself listen to it unless I'm running so it's an added incentive to get out the door and get the work in. I highly recommend Hardcore History, even if you aren't much of a history buff.
